New social media technology will cause headaches f

Barely a month since Google launched its latest social media application, SideWiki, and already PR’s have warned of ‘fresh hurdles to managing corporate brand reputation’ in the trade magazine, PR Week. Sidewhat? SideWiki allows members of the public to post a comment in a browser window alongside a company website, once they’ve downloaded the new Google toolbar. Obviously, those comments can be positive, neutral or negative but in the case of the latter, it’s going to mean companies must have some degree of digital damage limitation capacity to contain adverse comment in the virtual space. However, whilst this will mean an extra ‘hurdle’ for PR’s, there’s also a silver lining… “Companies who are serious about managing their e-reputations must ensure they have sufficient digital communications capacity to do so, which means, ultimately, more jobs for specialised PR’s,” says Suzannah Chapple, Chapple Director.
