‘Male sounding’ jobs put women off

Women are less likely to apply for vacancies that use “male” sounding words like “determined” and “assertive”, a study has found. Researchers from the German University Technische Universit_t Mônchen (TUM) showed 260 participants employment ads for management positions. If the postings used words commonly associated with men, like “assertive”, “independent”, “aggressive” and “analytical,” the women said they didn’t find the job appealing, and were less likely to apply. However, if the job used words like “dedicated”, “responsible”, “conscientious” and “sociable” they were more likely to think the job was for them. The study found that wording on the advertisements made no difference to men. http://www.recruitmentgrapevine.com/article/2014-04-08-male-sounding-jobs-put-women-off?utm_source=Sign-Up.to&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=7962-316439-Experienced+Hires+-+08%2F04%2F14#.U0uqF1drvyV
